PredalienAliens vs Predator: Requiem
This year's Starfest Balcony Theme Announced

Are you ready for a killer theme for the Starfest Balcony Challenge? How about a first-place DVD prize pack of ten titles? This is going to be one monster of a contest!

Detailed rules and discussion for this event is available on the Message board.

America’s own backyard becomes the most brutal battlefield yet for the iconic creatures from two of the scariest film franchises ever when Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem descends onto DVD and Blu-ray Disc April 15th from Fox Home Entertainment. Capturing the magic of the Alien and Predator legacies are first time directors and long-time fans of both film series, The Brothers Strause, renowned for their visual effects wizardry in such films as 300, X-Men: The Last Stand and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Picking up immediately after the events of Aliens vs. Predator, the Predator gives birth to the crossbreed ‘PredAlien’ shortly before the ship crashes into a small Colorado town. Caught in between the invasion of the Aliens and a new ruthless and methodical Predator, a group of townspeople must join forces to stop the infestation before the military obliterates the town to contain the outbreak.

Destination MoonDestination Moon
Film and Lecture by Kevin Atkins
Of all the science fiction films of the 1950s that are today acknowledged as "classics", Destination Moon is the least known and most under-appreciated, probably because it offers so little to the casual viewer.

Ironically enough, it is the very qualities that make this film so important that doom it as entertainment: its technical accuracy; its deliberately low-key, almost documentary approach; and above all its deadly earnestness – there are no cheap thrills here.

Demption Screening at Starfest

DemptionDemption
Short film to be screened at Horrorfest
One of the short films to be presented at Horrorfest this year is by a new director named Jason Neudecker. The film has been scored by one of our guests, Jonathan Tierston. We are kind of hoping that you'll take the time to check out the film. Who knows who'll be there to see it with you.

It's about a burned out Junkie (Gabriel Mann) who returns the money he stole from a twisted drug pusher (Felix Pire). But not before leaving a trail of violence, chaos and death in his wake. A local detective (David Krumholtz) enters to pick up the pieces and uncover the hidden truth.

While we were looking for information about his movie, we stumbled on the following blog entry by the director. We found his comments enlightening and definately indicative of what film making is all about.

My name is Jason Neudecker, I am a 28 year old director (isn't everyone) I grew up in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Washington DC. I have spent alot of time working with some of the best in the industry, I have learned alot of things, what to do and what not to do. I have worked in the industry as set PA, and that has allowed me to meet and work with alot of people, the one thing that I have learned in my career is that there is no book on breaking into this industry. I started out as an extra, so that I could meet the people that I needed to in order to learn the things that I know now.

I just finished a film that is like my child, I prepped for four months to shoot for two days. I worked with some great actors, and pulled alot of favors, I shot my movie on 5218 (Tungsten Balanced) film Stock, and had a great DP.

My writer writes for the Television show Numb3rs, and he is in my opinion one of the best that the show has although they are all great writers. I shot my movie very professional and had to go through alot to get it made. Before making Demption, I shot alot of short films in my living-room, backyard, alleys, friends stores, and anywhere else I could find to shoot. Demption has been to date my best work, I shot it for $10,000 which is due to the support of alot of my friends, my special effects supervisor is Tom Bellisimo who did all the effects for Tarentino up to Kill Bill 2. I learned alot during filming of Demption and had alot of working people involved to make my movie possible. I say this for one reason, if I can do this, anyone can. I was homeless for three years of my young adult life and lived in foster homes growing up.

Don't let me fool you, it takes hard work to make films and alot of patience, but it can be done, I used to just go out at three am after hearing sirens, and film the commotion to use later in movies. Once I took my camera out to get a beginning for my film "Divine." I had my friend drive, while I sat in the back of my Van with the back door open on the freeway to get a shot of a bus driving down the freeway and getting off the off ramp. I have used the hood of my car as a dolly, I have used wheel chairs and home made steady cams. I have done alot for my films, but never went to film School, except to take some film History and appreciation classes. I have learned alot.

I see alot of people trying to find their voice in film, and the one thing that I can tell you is, go for it. Don't talk about making a movie, make one, then another and another. One day you will find that voice - through trial and error.
